In 1914, Portland, Oregon became the first city in the United States to have a pro hockey team. Ever since, Portland has had a on and off relation with the sport. At one time Portland had the first U.S. team to compete for a Stanley Cup. At another time the city went nearly a decade without neither a team or an arena.
In 1959 the New Westminster Royals of the Western Hockey League ceased operations. Their players were combined with the Victoria Cougars roster for a year while Portland's Memorial Coliseum was completed. In 1960 the New Westminster franchise was moved to Portland. The Portland Buckaroos would become the greatest franchises to ever play in Portland and arguably the greatest to ever play in the old W.H.L. During their fourteen years in the former Western Hockey League, they would win eight regular season championships and three post season championships.
